Igreja do Carmo

Main Façade

Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church is located in the city of Viana do Castelo, Portugal. It was built in the first half of the seventeenth century.

In mannerist and baroque style, it has a Latin cross plan and the interior is decorated in gilt and tiles.

Carmo Church belonged to the former convent of the Carmelitas Descalços (Barefoot Carmelitas), founded on June 16, 1621.

The Church is beautiful and rich in carvings and pictures. However, the altars are from various eras and styles. At the top of the arch there is a luxurious cruise altarpiece which displays the three most beautiful images of this church.
