Capela de Santa Catarina

Main Façade

Santa Catarina chapel was located in Castelo da Barra.

Due to difficult access by fishermen to this Chapel, Philip III of Spain authorized the construction of the present Temple. It is situated about 50 metres from the fishing dock and inside are "ex-vows" in wax and miniature sailboats.

It is an ancient chapel whose conservation belongs to the Real Irmandade do Senhor Jesus dos Mareantes, (Fellowship of the Lord Jesus of Seafarers), whose existence predates 1500.

As a peculiarity of this temple, so revered by the fishing community, it is said to be there that the fishermen put the victims of shipwrecks, until their burial.
